International Day of Forests
Today is the International Day of Forests. Focus on Burkina Faso.
Burkina Faso's forests cover 6,616,500 ha, or 24% of the country. The forestry sector contributes 7.8% of GDP and over 90% of domestic energy needs. The wood-energy and non-wood forest product sectors are important sources of employment and income for rural populations.
However, these forest resources are undergoing continuous degradation that threatens biodiversity and leads to the loss of forest species. The annual loss of forests is 50,000 ha due to pressure from agriculture, livestock, abusive wood cutting and gold panning, aggravated by the effects of global warming.
The BKF/023 programme - Support to the sustainable management of the forest resources, financed by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and Burkina Faso, and implemented by LuxDev, allows :
- the management of 25 forests covering 363,000 ha ;
- the protection of 34 conservation areas of degraded forests
- the reforestation of plots of land with approximately 350,000 plants;
- the planting and processing of non-timber forest products.
