RWANDA - Field visit of AFD and LuxDev to the AFTER II project
In November 2023, a collaborative team from AFD and LuxDev embarked on a journey to two Integrated Polytechnic Regional Colleges (IPRC) as part of the Support project to technical training and employability in Rwanda (AFTER II). Launched earlier this year, AFTER II aims to revamp technical and job-focused education to support Rwanda's ambitious goal of creating 1.5 million jobs by 2024.
During their visit to IPRC Kitabi and IPRC Karongi, the team discussed the first component of the project: the infrastructure plans. These visits were pivotal in understanding the unique challenges faced by each institution and understanding the tailored interventions to address them.
IPRC Kitabi, nestled in a beautiful yet remote region, grapples with isolation impacting student enrolment and educational quality. The AFTER II intervention aims to create recreational facilities, foster partnerships to bolster employment opportunities, and expand student accommodations to reach a capacity of 300 learners, alongside upgraded academic and health facilities.

IPRC Karongi faces spatial constraints due to environmental regulations, with most existing buildings nestled on the coast of the Kivu lake. AFTER II will support building infrastructure further away from the lake, including increased student housing and upgraded facilities for academics, administration, and sports.

The main goal of both colleges is to enhance learning environments and create more job opportunities. The enthusiasm of the schools and the interventions proposed by AFTER II demonstrate Rwanda's commitment to a better future for its young people.
The project RWA/026 - Support for technical training and employability in Rwanda (AFTER II) is financed by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and AFD, and implemented by AFD and LuxDev, the Luxembourg Development Cooperation Agency.
