Located in West Africa, Togo is a dynamic country with a strategic geographical position, bordered by Ghana to the west, Benin to the east, Burkina Faso to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. Covering an area of 56,785 km2, the country is characterised by its cultural and natural diversity, from the beaches of the south to the mountain ranges of the north.
Togo has enjoyed a degree of political stability over the last ten years, and is carrying out major economic reforms to stimulate its development. The country has joined various regional cooperation frameworks, such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU), which are strengthening its integration in the region.
The agricultural sector remains a pillar of the Togolese economy, employing a large proportion of the population and making a significant contribution to national GDP, with key crops such as cotton, coffee and cocoa. At the same time, efforts are being made to develop the services sector, particularly trade, logistics and tourism. The autonomous port of Lomé, one of the country's main centres of economic activity, plays a central role as a transit hub for landlocked neighbouring countries, notably Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali.
Despite positive progress, Togo still faces structural challenges to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth. The economic model is still fragile, due to heavy dependence on exports of raw products and limited fiscal mobilisation. Poverty and rural exodus are also having an impact on the country's development, with growing urbanisation challenges in major cities such as Lomé and Kara, which require solutions in terms of infrastructure, health services and resource management.
In October 2024, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and Togo strengthened their partnership by signing a general cooperation agreement. In line with Togo's development priorities and vision, collaboration between the two countries will focus on the sectors of education, vocational and technical training and professional integration, digitalisation as well as climate change and the environment.
