World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day
On this occasion, focus on our collaboration with the Luxembourg Red Cross in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since 2020, we have been working together to support the holistic model of care for victims of sexual violence.
This project, covering both the General Referral Hospital and the Panzi Foundation, responds to the extreme violence and widespread rape resulting from the successive wars and persistent instability suffered by women and children in the South Kivu province.
Medical care for victims of sexual violence (term used at Panzi before medical care) is provided at the hospital, while the foundation takes over and completes the hospital's work through actions that promote the socio-economic reintegration of survivors of sexual violence (as it is called after medical care).
Thanks to the housing expertise of the Luxembourg Red Cross, 100 survivors of sexual violence were able to benefit from the construction of plank houses with a kitchen and latrine. In addition, 27 women received training in carpentry and participated in the production of doors and windows. This training is particularly important as it aims to facilitate the professional integration of survivors of sexual violence and leads to the award of a professional certificate by the Congolese government. Having a house and being able to generate income helps the process of socio-economic reintegration and psychological reconstruction of these women.
