Part of the Indicative Cooperation Programme (ICP) 2007-2011 health component, this programme for improved access to drinking water, basic sanitation and urban development (PEA) pursues more specifically the objective of making sustainable improvements in the health sector and public sanitation.
It intervenes in the complementary components of water and sanitation by building on the achievements of project MLI/008 and MLI/009 of the first ICP.
Regarding drinking water and sanitation the PEA supports the implementation of the actions planned in the national sector-based programme for water and sanitation (PROSEA) with the execution of water supply systems of which more than 80,000 people will benefit. Concerning waste management and urban development, the actions concern different urban centres of the Ségou region and certain communes of Bamako.
The added value of the PEA will be produced by the major focus put on the operationalisation of the new institutions, an effort which will contribute significantly to making local authorities responsible for water, sanitation and waste management and to their legitimating in the eyes of the population.
