The context

Nicaragua is one of the countries with the highest disaster risk due to its geographical location, relief, river basins, rainfall and the economic, social and cultural development of its population.

The objectives

The NIC/825 - Risk prevention and management in Nicaragua project, also known as "NIC-ALERT", aims to identify and implement viable actions to reduce the risk of disasters, prevent and adapt to climate change and other natural hazards, and mitigate their effects.

The specific objective of the project is to strengthen the resilience of the most vulnerable indigenous and Afro-descendant communities to cope with the negative impacts of climate change, through disaster risk prevention and preparedness.

Intervention areas

The action targets the coastal regions of eastern Nicaragua, historically neglected and remote areas, where hazards, high vulnerability and limited response capacity result in high levels of disaster risk.

The beneficiaries

In line with the principle of "leaving no one behind", the project addresses the negative impacts of climate change on the socio-economic rights of the following groups: women, children and young people, indigenous peoples, ethnic communities of African descent, the elderly and people with disabilities.

The approach

LuxDev's activities focus in particular on improving the capacities and empowerment of young people and women, as key agents of change, in terms of risk management and adaptation to climate change. These actions will mainly be carried out by increasing their participation and leadership capacities, combating gender-based violence and strengthening their organisation and social fabric to deal with disaster risks, including resilience and green and circular economy activities.

The stakeholders

This project is funded by the European Union and implemented by the European Union, UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) and LuxDev.
