The Faculty of Law and Political Science of the National University of Laos marks 50 years of legal development

The Faculty of Law and Political Science (FLP) of the National University of Laos successfully concluded a four-day academic seminar on "50 years of legal development in Lao PDR", bringing together 69 academic and administrative staff members to strengthen teaching excellence and align legal education with the country's evolving legal and governance landscape. The seminar was supported by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg through the Rule of law, access to justice and good governance (ROLAG) programme.

The seminar was officially opened by Dr Somdeth KEOVONGSAK, Dean of FLP, and Dr Reginald PASTRANA, Senior Sectoral Adviser to the ROLAG programme. Distinguished experts from the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Sivath Law Firm, and Prof. Ket KIETISAK, former Vice-Minister of Justice, shared valuable insights into five decades of legal reform and the future of the rule of law in Lao PDR.

Through dynamic panel discussions and practical exchanges, participants explored ways to modernise the teaching of governance, civil law, criminal law, business law and international relations, ensuring that graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to respond to contemporary legal and governance challenges.

The seminar reaffirmed the shared commitment of FLP, the National University of Laos, and the ROLAG programme to building a new generation of legal professionals who will uphold justice, strengthen public institutions and contribute to the sustainable development of Lao PDR. This reflects the belief that strong legal education builds strong institutions, and strong institutions build a stronger nation.

The ROLAG programme is financed by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and jointly implemented by the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Ministry of Justice, LuxDev, the Luxembourg Development Cooperation Agency, ILSTA and the University of Luxembourg.
