Bokeo farmers strengthen coffee value chain knowledge through exchange visit to Houaphan
Laos 04.03.2026 Projet
From 16 to 19 February 2026, a group of farmers and local stakeholders from Bokeo Province (Lao PDR) participated in a farmers-to-farmers exchange visit focused on coffee production and value chain development in Xamneua District, Houaphan Province. The visit was organised by the Local development programme, with technical input from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. It aimed to strengthen practical knowledge and improve coffee quality through hands-on learning and the sharing of experiences.
A fruitful exchange of experiences
During the visit, participants explored key stages of coffee production, including nursery development, plantation management, harvesting and post-harvest processing. The exchange provided an opportunity for farmers to observe good practices and discuss challenges directly with their peers. A total of 22 participants, including 6 women, took part in the activity, representing coffee farmers, local authorities and programme staff. The initiative also promoted inclusive participation, in line with the programme’s gender equality, disability and social inclusion approach.
The exchange visit helped us understand how quality coffee starts from the nursery and continues through every step of production. We are motivated to apply these practices in our villages.
One participating farmer highlighted the value of the experience.
As part of the Local development programme activities, the exchange supports ongoing efforts to strengthen the coffee sector in Bokeo Province, including the establishment of eight community-based coffee nurseries. This experience is expected to enhance coffee quality, foster stronger collaboration among farmers and promote more sustainable, market-oriented livelihoods in rural communities.
