Context
Kwihaza is a transformative initiative addressing key challenges in Rwanda’s agricultural sector, which employs nearly 70% of the population. The project is strengthening horticulture (fruits and vegetables) and aquaculture value chains to build more inclusive and sustainable food systems. It empowers women and youth, enables smallholder farmers to improve product quality and market access, and supports SMEs in adopting green practices. As part of the Team Europe Initiative “Feeding the Cities”, Kwihaza contributes to stronger food systems that boost local economies, improve nutrition and generate fair incomes.
Objectives
The project's objective is to foster more resilient, inclusive and sustainable horticulture and aquaculture sectors in Rwanda. This is achieved by enhancing food quality, increasing incomes and promoting the consumption of fish, fruits and vegetables. The project supports women, youth, cooperatives and entrepreneurs through training and improved farming practices, while also helping to reduce post-harvest losses and to open access to more local and international markets. It promotes climate-smart methods, better animal feed in aquaculture and cleaner production from farm to table. By supporting small businesses and updating food standards and regulations, Kwihaza works to create decent jobs and build a more resilient food system for the future.
Beneficiaries
Kwihaza targets smallholder cooperatives and producer groups in horticulture, aquaculture and fisheries, as well as SMEs across all stages of these value chains, with a particular emphasis on women- and youth-led businesses. The benefits extend to consumers, farmer unions, sector federations and the public institutions involved in shaping Rwanda's sustainable food systems.
Target geographical area
The Kwihaza project operates across all provinces of Rwanda, ensuring national coverage. Specific districts are targeted for aquaculture and horticulture activities based on their potential and relevance to these value chains. This approach enables tailored support while promoting inclusive and sustainable food system development countrywide.
Stakeholders
Kwihaza is implemented through a strategic partnership model that combines international expertise with local knowledge. Key partners include Enabel, Appui au Développement Autonome (ADA), Access to Finance Rwanda, the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board, the National Agricultural Export Development Board and the Rwanda Standard Board. This collaboration ensures impactful support across the target value chains.
