Opening horizons for Kosovo’s emerging artists
Kosovo 30.10.2025 Project
Kosovo’s comic art scene has been gaining international ground, and this year it reached a new milestone. Through GRAN Fest, the country’s only graphic novel and comic art festival, emerging artist Liza DERVISHAJ was awarded the first-ever artistic residency in France, a step that marks both a personal achievement and a broader recognition of Kosovo’s emerging creative voices. The artistic residency was one of the activities of the festival, financed by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and supported by LuxDev, the Luxembourg Development Cooperation Agency, through the Support to civil society in Kosovo project.
First ever residency by GRAN Fest
GRAN Fest, held in Pristina in May 2025, celebrates storytelling through illustration, bringing together artists, students and audiences in exhibitions, workshops and conferences that explore themes ranging from equality to social cohesion. The new residency initiative aims to help young creators expand their skills and networks beyond borders.
“Kosovar candidates applied and were part of a competitive process, ” says Gani JAKUPI, founder of GRAN Fest. “Together with our partners from Blois, we selected Liza DERVISHAJ as the most advanced candidate. It’s a meaningful way to identify new talent and give them the space to grow through a residency experience.”
Hosted in the city of Blois, home to France’s renowned bd BOUM comic festival, Liza’s residency offered time, space and inspiration to develop her craft and connect Kosovo’s art scene with Europe’s wider graphic culture.

In her own words: Liza DERVISHAJ on the residency
It was my first residency, so I had no idea what to expect, but it quickly became a month filled with much-needed creative energy. The atmosphere was perfect for focusing on my next project: my first graphic novel, which is still in progress. My workspace was bright and full of character, with large windows overlooking the streets of old-town Blois and walls covered in art. I especially loved the big bookshelf stocked with French graphic novels.
During the first week, I explored the city and even helped the museum staff prepare an exhibition, where I had the chance to handle some very old comic books and learn about the process of organising an exhibition. I was fascinated by the city itself — the narrow, vine-covered streets, the scent of lavender in the air, and the calm walks by the River Loire, where I often sat to read and sketch.
One of my goals was to improve my architectural drawing, so I practised sketching buildings and experimenting with colour, letting go of the need for perfection. Working at La Maison bd Boum with professional artists gave me the right kind of push — seeing their focus reminded me of the dedication this craft demands. The people of Blois were warm and welcoming. My advisor was a wonderful source of support, and I met friends who shared their art, music, and even recipes with me.
The experience gave me space to reflect, grow and refine my ideas. I came back home with more mature work for my graphic novel, new friendships and a deeper understanding of how history, art and everyday life intertwine.
