Vocational and technical training

Despite Senegal's efforts, access to vocational and technical training remains low. Current capacity only allows training to be offered to around 25% of young people entering the labour market. Furthermore, there is a mismatch between the programmes taught and the needs of formal and informal businesses. The sector is evolving slowly and would benefit from greater flexibility to better meet the needs of the labour market.

Through the Vocational and technical training programme, Luxembourg Cooperation aims to support the national policy of strengthening vocational training with a focus on young people aged 15 to 25, particularly young women in the northern and central regions of Senegal and the peri-urban area of Dakar.

The programme's interventions are organised around four main areas: access, quality of vocational and technical training provision, integration and governance.

These priorities are reflected in the following objectives:

• promoting equitable access to vocational and technical training for the formal and informal sectors;
• supporting the diversification of vocational training provision to adapt it to the needs of the economy, with a focus on equal access and meeting the needs of young people and women;
• improving the socio-professional integration of young people from formal and informal systems; and
• improving the management of vocational and technical training centres, encouraging citizen participation and the involvement of the private sector and civil society in the governance of the sector.
