In Lao PDR, Khammouan Province began the year 2026 with a dynamic training of trainers (ToT) session on interactive teaching techniques for early childhood education and primary education (grades 1 and 2), held from 5 to 9 January 2026. The training brought together education counterparts from four target districts (Mahaxay, Boualapha, Xaybouathong and Xebangfay) supported by the Local development programme in Khammouan Province. The objective of the ToT was to strengthen participants’ pedagogical skills and promote effective teaching and learning practices at the early childhood and lower primary levels.

Promoting play-based and student-centred approaches

The training was delivered by four trainers from the Teacher Training College in Savannakhet, who provided technical guidance, practical methodologies and interactive sessions aligned with the new primary curriculum, with a strong focus on student-centred learning approaches. The training incorporated a wide range of hands-on activities, games and songs, to ensure alignment with the ‘learning through play’ approach, encouraging active participation and meaningful learning experiences. Participants developed and demonstrated lesson plans using locally available learning materials, followed by peer feedback and supervision to reinforce learning and support continuous improvement.

Through this initiative, participants were equipped with enhanced teaching techniques and capacities to deliver further training for teachers in 65 schools across their respective districts, contributing to improved quality education in the province. By promoting interactive, student-centred and play-based learning methodologies, the initiative supports the effective implementation of national education strategies and fosters engaging learning environments for young learners. This effort also strengthens local education systems and promotes sustainable improvements in learning outcomes across Khammouan Province.

About the programme

The Local development programme is co-financed by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and Switzerland. It is jointly implemented by the Lao Ministry of Finance (formerly the Ministry of Planning and Investment) and LuxDev, the Luxembourg Development Cooperation Agency.
