The overall objective of project MON/005 is to contribute to a healthier population of Mongolia. It aims at improving health services in the areas of cardiovascular diseases and mother and child health care in particular, which is in line with the Health Sector Strategic Master Plan 2006-2015. Results are spread over four areas: telemedicine, cardiac surgery, cardiovascular diseases and mother and child healthcare.

The telemedicine component is to enhance the implementation of the National e-health Strategy through technical assistance in functional subject areas on the one hand and the strengthening of web-based education/teaching on the other hand.

Cardiac surgery is to be made available to one patient a day 250 days per year by the end of 2015. Technical assistance, trainings, specialised equipment (for one operating room) and secure operations for the first two to three years (consumables and maintenance) will be provided.

Cardiovascular diseases case management capabilities are made available to the entire population of Mongolia. Further strengthening of the existing Catheterisation Laboratory and the cardiology department of the Shastin Central Hospital is done through training, technical assistance and the provision of specialised equipment. On a decentralised level, cardiology services are expanded and consolidated through capacity building and equipment provision for all provinces.

The access to mother and child health care and reproductive health and neonatal health care is improved and expanded. The United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) plans to strengthen existing services and set up additional facilities for prenatal diagnostics at provincial level. They also intend to strengthen the Mother and Child Health Reseach Center’s technical capacity to provide telemedicine support and will establish a specialised services such as an assisted reproductive technology unit for infertile couples.
